Tips For Buying Vintage Clothes Pt.1

1. Always bring a friend or family member. We all hate to admit it but sometimes that beautiful polka dot dress is just too small. BUT we try it on anyway. And as you know, most 50s clothing has zippers on the side. Now in my experience I am not what you would call large or anything, curvy sure. And lo and behold I was in a dressing room trying on this beautiful pink 1950s party dress when I discovered that taking it off would be quite the experience. Now, some maybe experts in this department but you never know when the dress will fit but it won’t come off. So keep in mind that if you are alone to watch carefully in the clothes you pick out. Also realize that most clothes are extremely fragile, so if you are not comfortable shifting that silk dress down any farther please don’t. *Sigh* Also from experience.

2. The first ties in with this one. You should always have a second opinion on what you are buying. Sure the saleswomen will be there to say “It was made for you!” or “You look gorgeous in that!”. Because hey, that’s their job. Now sometimes if you go to a smaller owned business like the place I frequent often the women actually gives me her opinions on what’s hot and not. So if you cannot trust the person who is selling the clothes at least come armed with a camera phone to get some feedback from a friend.

3. I know many while picking through the clearance items come across some marvelous finds. Sure it has a stain but its only $10! Been there before. I suggest that if you cannot get the stain out or its too noticeable just move on to something better. Sometimes if I am not sure I really want something I will walk far enough away where I can still see the item, and if someone else is looking at it you will either have two reactions. “Eh, that’s okay. Oh! Look at that fabulous dress over there!” or “Bitch you better put that down before I have to pry it from your hands like a mad women.” Make sure whatever you buy is worth it. Cherish your findings!
